    1. This is mostly a song book, so I don't really think it counts as "read" if i can't play any of the songs. As an ethnography, very interesting, and worth reading (the reading-parts) for the history of American folk music.

    2. There's an intro by John Steinbeck, so if that doesn't sell you on it I don't know what will. The book delivers, filled with incredibly depressing little ditties about starving people who hate capitalists and literally want them to be dead. Lots of songs about unions, being hungry, and the Farmer-Labor party.The whole thing is put together by Lomax, so one wonders how much quote-unquote authenticness has been squeezed in. All of Guthrie's notes are in dialect (i.e. th' boy liter'ly writes a'like [...]

    3. songbook with historical commentary. Lots of union songs, some dustbowl songs, some tramp songs, some jailhouse blues. Great primary (and secondary) sources.
