    1. Don't leave home without it. Lot's of good information. Try to ignore the homophobia, christian paramilitarism, and embrace the outdoor fun with your troop!

Irrespective of whether you think the Boy Scouts organization is or is not politically "correct" in its treatment of gay males, this edition of the Boy Scout Handbook (9th edition, first published circa 1979) is a compendium of practical wisdom on such topics as camp cooking, first aid, how to tie knots, what plants not to eat (lest they kill you), survival skills, axe-manship (as in Paul Bunyan, not Les Paul), personal integrity and over-all character building ("brave, clean and reverent").     3. This should be required reading for any boy who wants to make something of himself. In addition to the obvious instructions on how to survive in the wilderness, it also includes instructions how to be a good citizen, the value of work and service and the proper way to sharpen a knife. It is also a good reference book to have around the house.

    4. This was my first Boy Scout handbook and still the one I return to time and time again. The cover is falling apart and every page is well-worn, with dog-eared pages and dirty smudges from years of handling. Hillcourt is the man when it comes to Scouting texts. Anything he writes is gold!

    5. I owned an earlier edition back in the early 60s, but I loved my Scout Handbook. It was full of practical advice on all kinds of things, especially as they pertained to the outdoors.
