    1. Mrs. Edwards has a fine collection here of Victorian spook and mystery. The supernatural is barely visible here except as a plot device but there are still enough atmospherics to make for a pleasant diversion. Edwards' forte is a sense of place and her locations and scenes are particularly vivid and expressive. The stories are blessedly free of the sameness that mars so many Victorian ghost collections.Solid three stars for this slim volume.

    2. Amelia B. Edwards was a Victorian traveller, adventurer and renowned Egyptologist. She was also a prolific writer of novels and short stories, many of them in the mystery and supernatural genre. She was a regular contributor to Dickens' All the Year Round Christmas editions, and many of the stories in this collection were first published there. It is only due to Wordsworth putting this compilation of some of her best stories together that I encountered her at all, and they are to be congratulate [...]

    3. A very well written and enjoyable collection of Gothic and ghostly tales. No outright horror, in the sense of gore and shocks found in modern tales, but a definite sense of creepiness and unease permeating the stories. I particularly liked "A Railway Panic", with it account of someone trapped in a carriage with a deeply disturbed man.Lovers of Dickens' ghost stories will certainly find much to enjoy here, and should provide good inspiration to anyone wanting to write a Victorian ghost story.

    4. Nicht so gruselig, aber ganz ordentlich, und die Autorin scheint für ihre Zeit ganz schön selbstständig gewesen zu sein.
