    1. In all of my years as a reader of fictional novels, I've come to know and love an ample number of fictional characters who, even after a generous passing of time, sustained themselves in my fondest memories, and became legends in my most treasured literary directories. These are the same about whom I still speak and make references now and again, whether in conversations with publishers and authors, or to certain individuals in the general public, specifically those who have their lot in the lit [...]

    2. The latest offering in the Roger and Suzanne mystery series takes our intrepid couple to Cuba. The series is a great travelogue of unexpected places and the timing of this one—given the thaw in US-Cuba relations—is spot on. Roger a PI, is asked to investigate the murder in Cuba of a US scientist. The man was killed by a hit-and-run driver in Havana while on a tour there. Roger and Suzanne are able to join a similar tour, using Suzanne’s biotech research credentials. The cast of characters [...]

    3. Jerold Last ’59, MS’61AuthorFrom the author:After more than half a century U.S. citizens can once again take a cruise ship or a scheduled airline flight to Cuba. What’s Cuba really like? From a review of the mystery novel Rum, Cigars, and Corpses: “As normalization of relations between the U.S. and Cuba gives American tourists the opportunity to visit the island, this exciting novel provides a real glimpse into a country that was literally frozen in time for over 50 years. The author and [...]

    4. A crime committed on Cuban soil how would Suzanne and Roger Americans, get to the bottom of this and find the murderer. Politics, espionage, greed, distrust you name it and it’s in this story. An intriguing and interesting storyline, filled with subterfuge, secret rendezvous, and lies, which makes this book quite captivating. Suzanne and Roger the mystery-solving duo were up against a wall but by using their Academic connections and their friends in high places, they manage to get too close fo [...]

    5. This is an enjoyable detective story with the added benefit of a tour of Cuba so authentic you can imagine being there. A fun read, recommended.

    6. Setting is very important. To some writers, it is almost a character in their books. I suspect this holds true for author Jerold Last, who actualy visited Cuba, in person, to make sure he gave his readers a “You are there” experience.I have little doubt he would ever dream of writing about a place that he hadn’t actually visited himself. So, if you feel like you know what Cuba looks like, how the air feels, what the birds sound like, what the flowers smell like, it’s because of the autho [...]

    7. A gripping tale of murder and espionageAs normalization of relations between the U.S. and Cuba gives American tourists the opportunity to visit the island, this exciting novel provides a real glimpse into a country that was literally frozen in time for over fifty years. 8. For all of my lifetime, Cuba has been as mysterious as the dark side of the moon. In his fascinating novel, Last unravels that mystery, as well as others even more dire, in this entertaining glimpse into a nation and culture very much in the news, and with which we all will soon be more familiar, finally. Best's book is a fun step in that direction. Only quibble: the pace of the book is rather slow for the genre.

    9. The author does not disappoint in this latest book in this series. Very individual, well-developed characters, a nicely arranged plot line and as always a wonderful 'inside look' at the countryside and people of a Latin American country. These are the kind of characters I always look forward to revisiting, both in a re-read and in new adventures.

    10. This tale of murder and espionage was pleasing--and complicated. And, a perfect read if you like mysteries. The characters are believable and the setting is so real you think you are actually smelling the flowers, and hearing the birds.
