    1. While this book offers much enrichment due to the Spanish/English language, I most liked how it was a book about imagination. Sofía's mind takes her to a great many places, and the Puerto Rican culture emanates from this text. I loved the beautiful illustrations and the ways the words danced from page to page. I am passing this book along to a Spanish teacher to use in her classroom because it has much to offer students. After a class reads this book, the teacher might ask students to write thei [...]

    2. Full review at: unleashingreaders/?p=6828Sofía’s adventure is a great introduction to Puerto Rican culture. I loved being transported into Puerto Rico and learning about the music, mythology, and landscape of the U.S. territory. I learned so much reading this book, and I found myself rereading after visiting the glossary in the back of the book. I also, as the daughter of an art museum director, loved the focus on community art. Maria’s story of the mural featured in the book shows how powe [...]

    3. A cold, wintry day in the city is transformed for a young girl when she is sent on an errand by her mother. While passing a mural of Puerto Rican symbols, she finds herself transported into Old San Juan. There she experiences Puerto Rican music, dance and culture, including meeting a Vejigante who had previously filled her with fear. 4. This is a book that features a young girl and her encounter with a mural in her neighborhood. She fears one of the characters depicted in the mural, but the images from Puerto Rico fascinate her and she is drawn into the celebration. This would be a great book to share along with Maybe Something Beautiful by F. Isabel Campoy, Barrio: Jose's Neighborhood by George Ancona and Luis Paints the World by Terry Farish. They all feature murals.
