    1. Not the most compelling read, but simple, rustic and charming as hell like the island itself. Good to know that Chincoteague stuck with the Union through the Civil War, even if - as the author suggests - it was largely due to economic need to keep the sales of oysters going to Phillie and New York.Loaded with hoary old anecdotes, though, like how in the early 1800's the islanders would have to go to the mainland for everything, including shoes.     2. A very interesting read. I love Chicoteague Island and enjoyed reading about it's history. The writing style is entertaining and enjoyable. The only complaint I had was that the people of the island have similar names and occupations and it became difficult to figure out who was who. I wish there may have been a family tree to refer back to.

    3. I found this book on the bookshelf in our rental cottage on Chincoteague and spent a lovely couple of days with it. The island has a fascinating history and I found this book to be a very readable account of it. Recommended read while looking out at the bay or the ocean!
