    1. Wealthy widow, eighty-one year old Eleanora Duncan, lived alone in her Victorian mansions after her husband Marvin died and she lost her only son in a car accident, caused by her daughter-in-law. She was a member of every imaginable club and associatioin in River Bend, Illinois, not because she was wanted or popular. On the contrary, if she wasn't so wealthy and a benefactor to all of them, nobody would have cared to even speak one word to her. She never had a good thought about anyone; she blam [...]

    2. Captivating Helen is a force to be reckoned with and continuously out sleuths local law enforcement. Wonderfully great and captivating read!

    3. Helen Evans is out taking a walk when she sees her elderly neighbor, Eleanora Duncan, nearly hit by car. It is only narrowly avoided when Helen grabs Eleanora and pulls her out of harms' way. Eleanora, overcome with emotion, confesses to Helen that someone is trying to kill her.Eleanora is a wealthy widow who lives with her housekeeper Zelma. Her husband died a few years ago, and her only child, a son, died when his wife lost control of their car. Eleanora still blames his widow Jean for the dea [...]

    4. Helen does it againThis series is not great literature nor powerful mystery, but it doesn't claim to be. It's small town whodunit, perfect for a rainy day with a cup of tea. Awfully anachronistic and stereotypical about seniors, though. The over-seventy set in this series has plenty of energy and sharp minds, but they wear hats to play bridge and have names from my grandmother's era. My grandmother would be 125 now, and I don't know any Clara, Agnes, Erma, etc. in her seventies. We're mainly Kat [...]

    5. This is a really great mystery, and a good read. I love this series, and Helen is a character that I'd like to know in RL. She doesn't take much slack from anyone, and yet she's compassionate and understanding, even when it's not really in her best interests. Read this and see if you don't agree

    6. Susan McBride tells a fabulous story. Who poisoned Elnora Duncan? Was it Jean Duncan her daughter-in-law? Was it Stanley Duncan Elnora's brother-in-law? OR was it Jamamia Winthrop her enemy. A very easy book to read and very entertaining. I am waiting for another River Road Mystery to come out.

    7. This was a good addition to the series. Helen seems to be getting more depth and a realness about her. I like the friens and family around town. This book Helen solves the murder of Eleanora Duncan. A bitter older woman who makes enemies much easier than friends. My only distraction in this series is how inept the sheriff seems.

    8. Disappointing. Read like a script for "Murder She Wrote." My experience with mysteries is that once you figure out who did it--and that happened early on in this book--you expect to see enough character development to rule out other suspects and confirm your choice. That just didn't happen here.

    9. Another highly enjoyable mystery featuring Helen. I will have to look into what other titles are available by Susan McBride, because her humorous writing and characters are just plain fun. If a cozy mystery is what you're after, give this series a look.

    10. Light reading, holds your attention without stressGood read for a cold winter afternoon. The kind of book you can pick up anytime and still keep up.

    11. Thank goodness I'm done with this book. I think Helen just makes friends with people accused of murder just to stick her nose in other people's businjess.

    12. Helen's character reminded me of Jessica Fletcher. It is what kept me reading these books with her character in them
