1 thought on “The Venetian House”

    4. A very nice story which reminds me Rosamund Pilcher's or Maeve Binchy's novels. I enjoyed a rich romance, full of mysteries and cute describes of Corfu (and as a Greek who travelled there I found them very real, not just the greek bulletin "sun-sea-souvlaki"), and a nice end without the usual panic who writers have after a 500 pages novel to end it in a page and who cares about the reader who finds suddenly nothing in the end. I would like more books from this lady!

    5. I’m sure this book could have been 200 pages shorter and have lost nothing in the telling. That said it was easy to read and generally engaging. I have to admit to finding the dialogue somewhat tedious however, nobody talks like this; the characters when conversing would need to sit down in turns due to how long the other person takes to say their bit, and everybody is so earnest in everything they say. I enjoyed it however and thought the characters interesting (minus the page long soliloquie [...]

    6. Blimey it was long! And so many bad/sad things happen to the people in this book. Thank God they had a Greek idyll to rest in. I can't believe how badly behaved some of the characters were. I sound like a headmistress when I say that. But honestly a bit beyound the suspension of disbelief. Toast

    8. I really didn’t like this one, had to struggle myself through every page. I’ve read the whole book, hoping it would get better, but for me it didn’t. Wasn’t my thing.

    10. An enjoyable read, if a bit too long - at 536 pp. in the large paperback format, it could have benefited from some strenuous editing & cutting the size by a quarter.A tale of family, loss & grief, but primarily of love & romance. Very easy to read with some interesting characters. Victoria's naivete was a bit hard to credit, but mostly they were a believable & likeable bunch. Corfu & the crumbling Vahros, the Venetian House itself, were lovingly described - I could picture th [...]

    11. This has been on my bookshelf for ages and I'm so glad I finally read it.Its a romance but the issues faced by the characters are quite heavy so prevent it from being a light and fluffy holiday read, in fact its quite intense. There are really two romances involved and all centre around the Venetian House which isn't in Venice its in Corfu where a lot of the book is set, making a nice summer read.Well written and very enjoyable and I'm looking forward to reading the authors other book Secrets and [...]

    12. I really enjoyed this story, my first by the author. Two love stories, one modern, one from the past and both linked to The Venetian House which is on the island of Corfu.Simple and elegant, the writing really captures the essence of Corfu - the unspoilt and very Greek Corfu not seen by the tourist.Alongside the love stories are the subjects of divorce and bereavement - very sensitively written and seen through both adults and children.Maybe a little heavy on the coincidences, but this doesnt sp [...]

    13. Actual rating 3.5*This was an easy read, with many intertwining plot lines, some predictable some not. Though the main plot is meant to be about the house at Vrahos, it's really about the relationship dynamics between several characters and how they respond to the various challenges of the plot. I did find the actions of some characters a little unrealistic, particularly the daughter Sophie's love for her mother despite the fact that there is never any evidence of her mother being anything but c [...]

    14. Victoria,s childhood holidays were spent in corfu at the venetian house owned by her grandmother. Her cousin Guy & his friend Richard also spent happy times there. Years later Victoria & Richard married & had a son Jake. When Richard was killed in a supposedly gun accident skeletons started to appear in the open. Beautifully described scenery I loved this warm & touching novel.

    15. This is almost straight Romance with a block R, Harlequin style, in a more 1960s vein--again, Sheepshanks writing as Mary Nickson concentrates more on formula and romance than on character development and her characters here are also more formulaic and wooden, less intriguing and offbeat.

    16. I loved this book, a modern family novel based in both the UK and Corfu. Wonderful writing, excellent characterisation from an elderly grandmother down to six-year-old Jake. Moving in places and almost impossible to put down. Highly recommended.

    20. I enjoyed the romantic plot and the setting at Corfu but had to encourage myself constantly to continue reading as the whole book was too longwinded.
