    1. Four and a half stars for this gentle and reflective book. The cover itself sets the scene showing a garden in soft colours and a boy, a rabbit, swelling leaves and blue agapanthus. Even the end papers are gorgeous but the first lines really set the scene for this book about loss and friendship. ‘The wind is raking through the leaves and I wish that you were here’ the text says. The reader sees a young boy sitting looking pensive and wishing a special friend was there with him. The next pictu [...]

    2. As he enjoys the joys of the great outdoors, especially his garden, a boy remembers special times shared with someone who is no longer with him. It could be that his friend or relative has moved away or has died since the text isn't explicit on that point. What is clear, though, is the affection the two shared as they spent time together watching their garden grow. Filled with elegant illustrations, the book has a poignancy that may prompt readers to reflect on their own losses and recall shared [...]

    3. A deceptively simple book about loss, memory and the passage of time, as represented by the seasonal changes in a garden. A young boy reminisces about time spent with a special friend in the backyard garden - planting seeds, sitting in the rain, watching plants grow. A comforting and uplifting look at the loss of a pet (or any special friend) and how they live on in our hearts and memories that could be used to facilitate discussions about loss, love and friendship with young children.

    4. A beautifully written book about a boy grieving the loss of a beloved pet. The story demonstrates the cycle of life through the seasons viewed from the boy's own garden. The story shows the cycle of life and continuity after the death of a loved one, without avoiding the themes of death, grief nor the longing one feels through the effects of death. Gentle and respectfully told; shown through lovely illustration.

    5. 6. I received this book as a GoodReads FirstReads giveaway.I don't know how I feel about giving a book like this to a child. I enjoyed the story myself, I thought the illustrations were nice & with the words effectively provide the feelings of sadness & loneliness while still having happy memories. However, I don't think that I'm going to give the book to my four year old niece, which was my original intention - I think for a child of her age, it would either be a little dull, or else a lit [...]

    7. I really want to read about this book, as I am having a similar experience to the boy in the book (Briony). I left all of my best friends, hoping that we could gain back all the beautiful memories. Recently, a beloved teacher in my school was killed in a shark attack, and I am having trouble overcoming the grief after few months. I am sure that this book will greatly assist me in finding my way back to a loved one through love and memories.

    8. Thank you to UQP for this review copy! Here in the Garden is one of my favourite picture books, for sure, because of how lovely it is. I just adore the illustrations, and though the story the words tell is very touching, also, and well done besides, it's the illustrations that hit me and swept me up and delighted me. They are just well they're really quite perfect. Beautiful colours and plants and things to look at.

    9. A beautifully written and illustrated book which deals with loss of a beloved pet in a gentle and understanding way.

    10. Such a beautiful picture book about missing someone (maybe deceased? maybe moved? It does not matter) and cherishing the good memories of having had the gift of spending time with them.
