    1. Getting through sone of the historic literature is not always easy. The author helps put things in context and helps the reader explore the limits and exaggerations in the existing record. Well worth reading.

    2. Having read almost all the war tales at this point (the ones I could get my hands on at least) I saw this one browsing the NYPL shelves and had give it a read. What I really wanted was a concise review of the what I've read so far, especially since it was disjointed and read in an among other not-quite-related books. For that, this did a wonderful job, as Varley compared the historical events with the events in the Tale and connects them very nicely in a way that something like Reischauer's pure [...]
