    1. Witty, provocative and often fun, these works have a surprisingly durable surface value as well as being a window on a turning point in history. To read them is to witness the modern age coming into being — as Diderot put it, the age "when we are beginning to shake off the yoke of authority and tradition in order to hold fast to the laws of reason." For better and for worse.Rameau's Nephew reads very much like a dialogue between ego and id. Another reviewer nicely describes it as a "rambling t [...]

    2. As a scientist, I have to say that I enjoyed D'Alembert's Dream even more than the justly famous Rameau's nephew, despite the stilted style of the dialogue in D'Alembert's Dream. I'm a huge fan of Darwin and it's salutary to read works like DD to see how these ideas that he brought to their full fruit had such currency pretty long before he arrived on the scene. 3. It's going to take me a few reads to get all that is to be had from this book. I see the potential, but don't have the time right now to give it the attention it deserves. Three stars for now, more or less to come later.

    4. Rameau is the Underground Man with without all the doom and gloomt that the Russians ought to be more lighthearted. I hear it's terrible over there.

    5. One of those books I read in college of which I can now only remember bits. I do, however, remember enjoying it as a tale of a young Parisian intellectual and subversive.
