    1. Read 6/25/12 - 6/27/123.5 Stars - Recommended to readers who enjoy short fiction that reads like non-fiction and fans of phoneticsPgs: 64Publisher: Aqueous BooksSay what you mean (and be sure to pronounce it correctly). The Mere Weight of Words - a novella whose very title is a twist in its own right on language and how we apply it - flows between the past and present as a young woman tries to come to terms with her estranged father's recent diagnosis and the uncomfortable emotions it triggers in [...]

    2. I had the pleasure of reading an advanced copy of Carissa Halston's novella, The Mere Weight of Words, while awaiting my flight at the Palm Beach Airport. Seated near me were very loud octogenarians using their cell phones in an old-timey fashion [receiver to mouth, speaker to ear, 'get me an outside line'—like that] and a bevy of crying infants, and yet I found myself completely lost in the world Halston creates here. It's a story about physical paralysis and emotional inheritance, a story ab [...]

    3. I received a copy of this book from the author through the first reads giveaway (thank you!) Being a novella, it was a quick read offering glimpses into various relationships of the main character Meredith. I found the focus on linguisitics interesting and was intrigued by the main character and her experiences. In the end, there was a lot of intentional silence on Meredith's part, and I wanted her to share more emotional depth. I appreciated how the relationships portrayed were complicated, unr [...]

    4. I'm not rating this because it's my friend's book, so I feel biased. I enjoyed this novella about a woman coming to terms with her relationship with her father. If you're at all interested in linguistics and word play, this is the book for you. The protagonist chooses her words with excruciating care, whether she's addressing the reader or another character.

    5. Carissa Halston's novella is a deeply felt tale of fathers and daughters which brings us up against the limits of language. Meredith, known as simply Mere, is a linguist who grapples with the reinvention of her career after suffering from facial palsy, then the reinvention of herself when faced with the potential loss of her father, from whom she's been estranged for nearly twenty years. When Meredith initially hears that her estranged father has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, she says nothi [...]

    6. Reviews:“With smart, inventive wordplay, Halston explores the veracity of language, and ultimately, of love. More, please, Carissa Halston.” — Marc Schuster, Shelf Unbound“The Mere Weight of Words is literary fiction written with a muscularity of prose that exercises the talents of the writer and the expectations of the reader. It is therefore exactly what literary fiction should be or should at least aspire to. This is a novella in Technicolor and HD and 3D all at once. It has a Cubist [...]

    7. *This book was won from a First Reads giveaway on *Good short novella about life, love, family and the consequences of your words and that you should think more about the weight of what you are saying. It was VERY short, but not bad.
