    1. This book has great ideas that are hobbled by inconsistent execution. There is too much to learn for one go at it, so we covered on chapter a day.We actually read Part II: Instruments first. Students learn about the organization (where everyone sits) and instruments of the orchestra. Each chapter features an introduction into the featured section, followed by explanation of each individual instrument. Chapters include: Strings, woodwinds, brass, percussion, and keyboard. Photographs well illustr [...]

    2. Subtitle: Listen While You Learn About the Instruments, the Music and the Composers Who Wrote the Music! This really fine book would make a great learning tool for families homeschooling and for anyone who wants to introduce their children to classical music and an orchestra's instruments. The CD adds to the book by having the type of music discussed as well as samples of each instrument. I come from a musical background of playing the clarinet and bassoon in high school along with learning piano [...]

    4. It seemed ok, but the illustration style was not my preference (to cartoony". Kids weren't as into it as I had hoped. Maybe try getting it out from the library again when they are older.

    6. This book is a bit lengthy and may take children a couple of times looking at it to get through the whole thing, but it is a fascinating book. It does a really good job of introducing music. It starts out by introducing various musical periods and composers, then moves on to introduce the different families of instruments (strings, woodwinds, brass, etc.) and specific instruments within that family. I'm a pretty musical person and I think that it does a fairly accurate job of explaining introduc [...]

    7. Robert Levine expertise in writing about classical music is clear in his beautiful children’s work, The Story of the Orchestra. The book introduces children to the instruments of the orchestra and includes an overview of the different periods of classical composition and brief but interesting biographies of notable composers of each era. The book’s history and facts are accurate and, with the simple organization of sections and subgroups (i.e. Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and Modern are sub [...]

    8. My 19 month old twins love music, so this book grabbed my attention. I checked out The Story of the Orchestra a year too early for my children. I loved reading it! My 19 month old twins did not love hearing about the various composers and instruments. This book will be great when they are three, but at a hair away from two this book is way to complex for them. However, the CD that accompanies the book is absolutely fabulous. It has many selectionst too much, but not too littleof the "best of the [...]

    9. A great way to be introduced to the instruments of the orchestra, not all, but most. The story/descriptions about composers and musical history as well as the instruments themselves are basic but contain enough detail to present a good grounding in classical music. The illustrations are colorful and point out interestesting details of the instruments. The musical selections are very short and chopped off at times but do serve the useful purpose of allowing readers to also be listeners and in the [...]

    10. I'm currently using this book to help my students learn music vocabulary. If you have kids or want to help someone learn about composers and instruments, this is a very fun book! Each page has lots of information about a composer or instrument (with funny drawings) and then you listen to a specific track on the CD. So for the flute, you listen to a piece featuring the flute, etc. All the music is classical music. I think I might want to buy this one. The CD itself has lots of good music on it to [...]

    11. I bought this book from a children's book fair a few years ago. Even though I teach, I actually bought the book in the hopes that I would learn something. I did. I recently got another copy and just donated it to the music teachers at my school. They LOVE it and have managed to write a few lesson plans based on the book. If you have a young child you can encourage to listen to something besides 50cents or Britney Spears this book will help you introduce them to something new in a fun, informativ [...]

    12. This book comes with a CD of orchestra music that students can listen to as the book is read. I think this book is ideal to utilize to help children develop an understanding of the relationship between music and math. They can count beats and tempos. They will also learn how many instruments make up the different sections of the orchestra and how sheet music is essential to creating complicated melodies.

    13. This book comes with a CD that earns the whole thing a 5-star rating from this momma. My only complaint is that the modern orchestral pieces are not on the CD. I assume this had to do with copyrights, but it was a major disappointment to be reading and listening along and suddenly lose the option to hear a sample. Even still, five stars!

    14. I really enjoyed this book. The pictures were so bright and colorful, and the overall style and layout of the book was very appealing. I also learned quite a few things about the instruments myself. Children who love music will also love this book.

    15. Lydia: It's fun to learn about different composers, and you get to learn about music, which is really thrilling.Mom: Very well written and illustrated; comes with a CD of samples of well-known works of each composer and style. I learned a lot, too.

    16. Terrific resource with accompanying CD! My kids have loved learning about the instruments and composers and, at least for a little while, were able to identify some excerpts of symphonies by name and composer (when we were listening to it everyday). Very fun and informative!

    17. Definitely a must have in a child's library. This was the inspiration behind this year's Christmas presents for my nieces & nephews. Next year it will be the ballet book with complementary books & performance DVDs. I love that these books exist in the world.

    18. Great introduction to the orchestra and to classical music in general. Aimed at kids but suitable for adults too.

    19. I loved this book and so did my kids (and my Classical Conversation's class). It has great illustrations, is full of interesting facts. The cd is great too.

    20. I enjoyed this book. I really liked the little known facts that were added about each if the composers. Great addition to our homeschool library.
