    1. You read enough romance, it does become formula. Not this one! No lords, no ladies, no balls, no ton, just a middle class soldier and a French refugee.lovely! Gaston is more than a competent writer and I'd actually like to read more of her books. My third BBA book.

    2. It was okay. 2.5. The writing appeared a little simple for my liking. I liked the historical backdrop of Badajoz and Waterloo. The plot started out well and the book has a honourable, worthy hero in Gabriel but I am not sure about the heroine. Although she loves Gabriel, she does not show it and appears throughout the story to use him for her own ends. And one has to wonder how Gabriel did not notice his ring which she wears around her neck. The heroine does not come through until the very end. [...]

    5. This was a wonderful read for a Sunday morning in bed. I adored Gabriel. He was so honourable and so in love with Emmaline. He wanted to make her happy, even if it came at a cost to himself and giving up his dreams of settling down and leaving the army.Emmaline was so sweet too. She'd regretted not speaking up when she disagreed with her first husband and then, she regretted not speaking up soon enough when Gabriel leaves her so she can be with her son. Emmaline grows as a person in the book. Sh [...]

    6. A gallant hero, a wonderful heroine, generous but torn between what her responsibilities and her desires.Brit Gabriel meets French Emmaline in Spain during a battle. He rescues her from being raped just after her husband is killed, and saves her son's life. He protects them and gives them money to leave the country. Time passes and he sees her again in Brussels. Her son has gone to war and she's alone. She invites Gabriel to her bed, and they have an affair that ends when he goes to battle--agai [...]

    7. 2.5 stars hmmm, not sure what to say about this one. Did I enjoy it? yes. Were there parts of the book that I didn't like? yes. Would I read it again? No.The hero and heroine kept their feelings to themselves for way too long in the storyeven though they were making whoopie out the wazoo, they didn't tell each other they loved one another until about 10 pages from the end. And at that point, they'd already broken up twice. I feel a little let down because the whole reason Emmaline wouldn't be wi [...]

    8. A soldier's second chanceCaptain Gabriel Deane has known his fair share of pain, but he'd take a dagger to the chest rather than relive the torture of rejection from the woman he loves.Saying no to Gabriel broke Emmaline Mableau's heart, but being a soldier's widow had already cost her family too much. Now she wears Gabriel's ring around her neck: a reminder of the man who can never be hers. Two years later, Emmaline's hand trembles as she goes to knock on Gabriel's door. 9. This is a true well written Historic Romance set in the Regency period, and I have been looking for it. Having been reading books from this genre for only a couple of months, pretty intense reading to escape the grieve resulted from the passing of my beloved dog, I have enjoyed many from authors such as Tessa Dare and Lisa Kleypas but I just felt some better ones must been out there. I kept reading and found Diane Gaston's books. those characters are well developed with story set in extraordinar [...]

    10. *Yawn* Good writing but a dull plot. Way too vanilla for my taste. Gabriel was an endearing hero, but Emmaline's devotion to her angry son become tiresome, which ultimately dragged out the story unnecessarily. However, I did enjoy the history and time period beginning at the Battle of Badajoz. Still, it's not the best historical out there. 3 stars.

    11. This historical romance started out good, set in Badajoz and Waterloo but before long I started to dislike the heroine and how poorly she treated the hero. Then all they did was think back to the good times and midway I started skimming. Captain Gabriel saves Frenchwoman Emmaline and her son during the British riots at Badajoz.

    12. This is not only a romance novel. It's also packed with adventure & action. Almost at the end of the book, I felt sad that they wouldn't be together. But I know that it will be a happy ending. And I was right!

    13. This was book that was quite unexpected, considering that it's the final book of the three solider series. I enjoyed it!

    14. There was nothing super exciting or remarkable about this book but I know I can count on Diane Gaston to deliver a kind, honorable hero. So, there's that.
